Excursion destinations in Grossarltal
must-see sightseeing attractions
Grossarltal offers a wealth of discoveries. In addition to numerous alpine pastures and high peaks, a variety of attractions await the whole family, including the Kösslerhäusl, the valley museum "On the Alm - Between Heaven and Earth," and many more. Nature, culture, and tradition take center stage in this “Valley of Mountain Huts”.
In the 16th century, the Kösslerhäusl was home to the Kösslers, a family of miners. Since then, it has been preserved, and now visitors can view the old smoke kitchen (Rauchkuchl), numerous rural tools, the rooms, and much more.
The unique exhibition showcases the life of many families during that time in Salzburg province. This attraction is particularly popular with families in summer. Here, farmwomen still bake country-style doughnuts and bread for the enjoyment of their guests.
At the "On the Alm - Between Heaven and Earth" exhibition, you can playfully learn about life at hill farms and inside the National Park. What animals live here? How are the alpine pastures maintained? How are the animals grazing there cared for and their milk processed? The answers to these and many more questions can be found at the Valley Museum located at the Hüttschlag valley head.

In the heart of Hüttschlag, along the extensive stone wall just below the village hall, the National Park Street-Art Gallery has been established. On this wall, oversized depictions of rare birds from Hohe Tauern National Park are displayed. The wings were painted by artist Editz Sulzenbacher. Accompanying these impressive wings, you will find a wealth of information about the distribution and unique characteristics of each bird.
Tip: Only the wings are painted, making this a truly unique photo spot for visitors. You, yourself, become part of the art project, forming the body of these rare birds.

In July 2023, the "Kunstroas" exhibition was opened for the first time at the valley head in Hüttschlag. Various artists, working in different genres of art and architecture, explore the peculiarities of the Grossarltal. They delve into the ecological and social conditions of the area. Inspired by these factors, the artists generate new approaches and perceptions for the Kunstroas.
The artists have created 5 Kunstroas stations, extending from the starting point at the Valley Museum and all the way out to Ötzl Lake. These artworks can still be viewed until November 2023. A new Kunstroas exhibition is set to open in the summer of 2025.

The Alte Wacht (Old Watch) at the entrance to the Grossarltal is one of the last remaining toll barriers in the province of Salzburg.
In 1566, the Old Grossarl Road was hewn out of the rock, passing directly through the Alte Wacht. With the construction of the Stegbach bridge in the 1990s, this function became obsolete. The Alte Wacht is located on the left side when entering the valley.
The Scouting Guild first gathered in Grossarl in 1968 for the "Regional Meeting of Alpine Countries." Annually since then, between 300 and 500 Guild Scouts from 15 or more countries have met for a week of interaction in Grossarl.
Focal points of these weeks included society, cultural issues, social activities, sports, nature experiences, roundtable discussions, and special exhibitions.
The Scouting Guild has erected several monuments in Grossarl.
- Scout Salute near the bandstand
- Europa Table
- Heaven’s Knot
Grossarl and Hüttschlag are home to two parish churches, numerous chapels, and "Marterl" (small religious monuments). Most chapels and Marterl were erected as symbols of gratitude and also represent the (former) popular piety of Grossarltalers.
