Mountaineering Villages (®Bergsteigerdörfer) are places and regions in the Alpine area that are assessed according to a defined set of criteria. The criteria include, among other things, village character, tourism infrastructure for mountain sports, Alpine expertise, mobility and accessibility by public transport.
Hüttschlag has been a Mountaineering Village since 2008. The Mountaineering Villages project is an implementation project of the Alpine Convention.
What is a Mountaineering Village?
Mountaineering Villages are assessed according to a shared catalogue of criteria. These criteria form the basis for admission and for the further development of the villages.
The criteria include, among other things:
- Location in the Alpine region
- Village character
- Tourist infrastructure suitable for mountain sports
- Accessibility by public transport
- Offers and information for mountain sports enthusiasts
- Local mobility services
- One of the mandatory criteria is also the commitment not to develop new ski areas or carry out large-scale expansions of existing ski areas.
Hikers can look forward to many traditional mountain huts serving regional and homemade specialities. For those who want to venture a little higher, there are numerous opportunities for a wide variety of mountain tours leading to the scenic peaks around Hüttschlag.

The Mountaineering Village of Hüttschlag offers all ski tourers, snowshoers, cross-country skiers, as well as winter enthusiasts one and all, a recreational program rich in variety, far removed from the noisy, hectic outside world.
