The Mountaineering Villages (®Bergsteigerdörfer) are authentic Alpine locations selected according to strict criteria. They distinguish themselves through exemplary development in sustainable alpinism, as well as excellent quality with respect to the landscape and environment. The initiative was originally a project of the Austrian Alpine Association. Currently, 29 villages in Austria, Germany, Italy, and Slovenia are permitted to call themselves "Mountaineering Villages."
In these villages, you will find a wide range of mountaineering opportunities that don't rely upon modern technology such as cableways.
Since 2008, Hüttschlag has counted itself amongst the select group of "Mountaineering Villages," one of the first places chosen for this project by the Austrian Alpine Association within the scope of the International.Alpine Convention
What is a Mountaineering Village?
Mountaineering Villages are not the most famous mountain locations and, as a consequence, have successfully retained their authentic character. These villages serve as exemplary hubs for regional development and sustainable Alpine tourism. Mountaineering Villages guarantee a professional infrastructure for alpinists.

Hikers can expect many rustic mountain huts offering local and homemade specialties, places where people as well as livestock feel right at home. For those wanting to aim higher still, there are numerous options for tours to the scenic alpine summits surrounding Hüttschlag. The Hüttschlag Wand, which rises on the left side of the valley, is particularly striking. The fixed-cable climbs there are especially rewarding.
Magical winter landscapes, snow-covered hillsides, all nestled within a magnificent Alpine world. The Mountaineering Village of Hüttschlag offers all ski tourers, snowshoers, cross-country skiers, as well as winter enthusiasts one and all, a recreational program rich in variety, far removed from the noisy, hectic outside world.
