It tastes so much different: more authentic, more intensive, full of pure life energy. And always accompanied by the magnificent mountain world of the Hohe Tauern.

While things are still quiet in the valley, the staff up at the huts are already hard at work. First working with the animals in the barn, then processing the milk. It is a long day with so much to do. But your hut hosts are always delighted to treat hikers to their homemade delicacies, prepared true to generations-old recipes, right there at the hut itself:

Sleeping at a Mountain Hut

At some mountain huts you can also spend the night. For the most part, you will have to forego a number of creature comforts. You might have to sleep in dorms and wash yourself at the outside well. Though there are now a few notable exceptions, including rooms with showers. A traditional hut evening is also definitely something to look forward to. The next morning, you will be awoken by the sound of cows or perhaps by the cowherd's dog doing its morning rounds.

The Valley of Huts

Due to its high concentration of mountain huts, Grossarltal has earned the nickname "The Valley of Huts". Around 40 staffed huts invite hikers to stop in for refreshments. Most of these huts are open from mid-June until mid-September. However, if the weather is good, the first huts already open in May and sometimes remain open until October.
