A Mecca for Ski Mountaineers
In summer the Grossarl Valley calls itself the "The Valley of the Alms", and in the winter is could easily be called the "The Valley of Ski Mountaineering Tour". Away from the hustle and bustle of the ski piste, the multitde of peaks around the resorts of Grossarl and Hüttschlag are very enticing with numerous tours of varying lengths and levels of difficulty.

Deep snowy slopes, glisterning ice crystals and rays of warming sun - what more could a ski mountaineerer wish for? The Salzburg Grossarl Valley with its 12 side valleys and the two resorts of Grossarl and Hüttschlag (National Park Hohe Tauern) is home to an enormous alpine pasture area and many mountain peaks with heights of 2,000 to nearly 3,000 metres.
The most well-known skiing mountain in the valley is probably the Kreuzkogel, peak of the popular Grossarl-Dorfgastein ski circuit. Its a lot quieter and contemplative on the surroundings mountain peaks. For example of the namesake "Kreuzeck", one of the best-loved ski mountaineering peak in Hüttschlag. With its over 2,200 metres its a popular ski mountaineering destination the whole winter as well as the Filzmooshörndel and the Loosbühel in the Grosarl Ellmau Valley. In late spring the ski tour mountains in the valley head are appealing, such as the Mandlkogel (2,442 m) and the Keeskogel, which as highest mountain in the valley with its 2,884 m dominates the majestic valley head. | | Well-loved meeting-point for ski mountaineerers is the Aschaustüberl approx. 4 km behind Hüttschlag. Here like-minded people meet and exchange experiences and latest news. After a hearty "ski mountaineerer's soup" they admire each others photos taken on previous tours.
The local ski schools offer qualified guiding for those unexperienced ski mountaineerers. You can also hire the necessary equipment, which is very helpful for beginners, who will soon be entralled by the unique beauty of this leisure activity in unspoilt countryside.
Together with some ski mountaineering specialists in the valley and the map publisher W. Mayr from Innsbruck the Grossarl Valley Tourist Board has produced a new ski mountaineering guide, which describes the 10 most beautiful tours in the valley.
The 28 page brochure contains detailed descriptions of the individual tours, 27 photos and 10 detailed maps as well as general tips for ski mountaineering and information about the valley. The guide is available from the Grossarl Valley Tourist Board and in Grossarl sports shops as well as directly from the publisher W. Mayr at a cost of € 2,50. There's also an accompanying hiking and touring map available - no. 311 "Grossarl Valley" from Tappeiner publishers to a scale of 1:35.000. |
