History of Hüttschlag

400 until 700:

According to local history Slavs from Carinthia and Lungau invaded the valley around this time. Many place names such as Klettn, Karteis, Schrambach, Tofern, Moritzen etc. have Slavic origins. Then came the Bavarii who ousted the Slavs. There was often fighting, especially in the Tappenkar and Bundschuh areas. The Bavarii won the upper hand.

The Church in Hüttschlag:

Even as far back as 1000 there was a wooden chapel here, which was extended some years later. In 1675 Hüttschlag was declared its own vicarage and in 1679 the new church of St. Joseph was consecrated by Archbishop Maximilian Gandolf von Khuenberg. It wasn't until 1891 that the vicarage was declared a parish.

Schooling: Schooling began in 1755. In 1735 the former Sacristan's house was built. In 1755 the first lessons took place in the Sacristan's house. The first teacher was the Sacristan of the time Max Paumann. In 1831 and 1905 a new classroom was added. In 1958-1960 the new primary school was built. In 1940-1972 the school in Maurach was in existance. There has been a secondary school in Grossarl since 1955.

Mining in Hüttschlag:

Copper and sulphur were mined here as early as the 14th and 15th centuries. In the original underground tunnels you can still see traces of wooden wedges, iron chisels and sharp hooks. Melting was done at first at the Hüttegalm.

Hüttschlag 1130-1137:

In 1130 a first path down into the valley was supposeldly constructed. First names were: Arla, Arela, Urla, Michel-Arl, many Arl...resulting in Grossarltal.

1137 Archibishop Konrad ordered the Tauern valleys to be cleared of trees and to be reclaimed as land. The settlers choose the best and the sunniest spots.
