Grossarl

History of Grossarl

Grossarl stretches from the "Stegenwacht" to the village of Hüttschlag. The resort covers an area of 129.25 km² and is split into the following districts:

MitterlingName derives from "middle length", meaning the long stretch of the Grossarl Valley basin (including hamlets of Eben und Bach)
NiederlandCovers the hamlets of Au and Schied
EllmauThe largest and most densely populated area near the  Grossarl Ache river
Markt / Unterberg The original centre of the village in the mouth funnel of the Ellmaubach stream (Markt) and its opposing valley side (Unterberg)

Alte Wacht
Denkmalhof Kösslerhäusl

around 930 BC According to local legend, the first valley settlers made their homes on a pile of rubble.
1000The Salzburg Church took over control of  the vast forest and pasture land area.
12th centuryAt the beginning of this century  "Grossschwaigen" was founded (farming homesteads).
1348 / 49 The raging plague decimated the population of many farms, which were then left desolated. The whole economic development of the area suffered under this catastrophe.
1399Archbishop Gregory bestowed a market licence "upon his subjects" in the "grosse Arl" for five free markets per year to sell "animals, fat, cheese, corn and other produce".
15th to 17th centuryThe sleepy parish became a sizeable market town, under the jurisdiction of Werfen. The boom in mining led to an upswing and many grand houses were built around the market square by businessmen and craftsmen (shoemaker, tailor, weaver, iron and woodsmith etc.) The oldest shop and tavern orginated around 1320.
1672Grossarl acquired its own County Court.
1731 / 32 Due to the Protestant Eviction (all protestants were banished on orders of the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg) 551 Persons had to leave their homes and emigrate to East Prussia.
1802Secularisation (removal of church power and territory by the aristocracy) and ground taxes brought further hardship to the reduced population of the valley.
from 1960 Due to road connections, motorisation and technical developments there was an increasing movement of labour away from agriculture. Tourism, built on private initiative in the Grossarl Valley, brought about not only an economic upswing, but additional demands on the local  council (school, old people's homes, roads, ground redesignation planning, sewage system, sports facilities...).
1962On the 17th of June Grossarl officially became a market town.
1967Foundation of the Grossarl Lift Company and building of the first lifts.
from 1971 Tourism has grown in leaps and bounds. With the connection of the ski area with the Gastein Valley and founding of the Ski Circuit Grossarl Valley/Dorfgastein. there has been an upward trend for the related economy. The whole Grossarl Valley profited from such developments. Many ideas to improve the infrastructure and acquire facilities for the local inhabitants were able to be realised.
