Freshly groomed piste in Grossarltal

The Grossarltal-Dorfgastein ski area has made a special name for itself when it comes to piste maintenance. In fact, it has received a number of awards for its efforts. Night after night, 23 modern snowcats are hard at work, grooming all the pistes in the ski area and guaranteeing you will be able to cut your own fresh tracks across a pristine carpet of white the very next morning.

Take a look at the maintenance work conducted on our pistes for yourself:

Safety Precautions

In order to guarantee absolute safety out on the pistes, many different safety measures are necessary. Barriers and other safety features are put up, including crash mats, signs are positioned correctly.

The following video shows you the work conducted on the pistes – for your safety.

Snowmaking Machines
Snowmaking by night
Even if beautiful white snow isn’t dropping “in buckets” from the heavens, the Grossarltal-Dorfgastein ski area is still well prepared. In fact, around 90 % of all pistes have snowmaking capability as needed.

Pure water, without any kinds of additives, is forced under pressure out into the sub-freezing air. The water crystalizes immediately and turns into snow.

The water used in snow production comes from various springs and mountain streams close to the pistes themselves. Incidentally: that water is actually pure enough to drink!

In order to guarantee you the very best snow and piste conditions, the following snowmaking equipment is available as needed in the Grossarltal-Dorfgastein ski area:

  • 214 propeller snowmakers
  • 248 snow lances
  • 4 ponds with a total volume of 191,000 m3
  • 2 water towers

The energy needed for snowmaking is produced by the Grossarl Lift Company’s own small hydroelectric plant. This guarantees we always treat nature cautiously.

Always wanted to know how snowmaking in the Grossarltal-Dorfgastein ski area actually works? If so, take a look at the following video.
