Grossarl Valley on the Salzburger Almenweg: 350 km of enjoyable hiking
From hut to hut on the trail of the gentian
During its 350 km-long journey through the mountain world of the Pongau region, the Salzburger Almenweg leads to over 120 alpine huts in Salzburg, Austria. A one-of-a-kind concentration of alpine huts boasted by no other Austrian province than the Salzburger Land. Having a good memory certainly doesn't hurt, especially since every hill farm and every alpine hut has its own name. None is like the other. Yet in every single one of them, you are welcomed with the same authentic brand of heartfelt hospitality. And also, of course, by mouthwatering specialties of the hill country including fresh milk, cheese, butter, cream cheese, yoghurt, bread, bacon and home-distilled schnapps. And through the whole way you accompanied by the gentian. You find it on the marks, the huts, on benches.Four of the total 31 stages go through the Grossarl Valley. So Grossarl and Hüttschlag are ideal initial points for hiking tours on the Salzburger Almenweg.
The Salzburger Almenweg goes from Bad Gastein to the Toferscharte. Everybody, who has enough condition should hike up to the Gamskarkogel - which is is 2.467 m the highest gras-mountain in Europe. Tip: Special experiences are sunrises and sunsets on this mountain. And the best you can sleep directly on the Gamskarkogel, at the Bad Gasteiner Hut (Gamskarkogelhütte).

Then the way takes you to Hüttschlag, to the Hallmoosalm, the Karteisalm and the Karteistörl. From here you hike down to the Tappenkarsee in the Kleinarl Valley. Then the way takes you to the Draugsteintörl and back to Grossarl Valley. Further you come to the Draugsteinalmen, Filzmoossattel, Filzmoosalm, Loosbühelalm, Weißalm, Ellmaualm, Großwildalm, Breitenebenalm, Karseggalm, Unterwandalm, Rothofalm (Muggenfeldalm) and to the Maurachalm. Then you leave Grossarl and you come to St. Johann, Wagrain. As an alternative you can hike on the mountains where you can enjoy the beautiful view. From every hut you can easily hike down to the Grossarl Valley. After the Salzburger Almenweg leaves Grossarl behind it takes you to Wagrain, Kleinarl to Obertauern, Filzmoos, Werfenweng, to the Hochkönig, to the Salzburger Sonnenterrasse, to the Gastein Valley and after all back to Grossarl Valley.
